You will earn valuable GE credit as you study in Spain, one of the most fascinating and beautiful countries in the world. Modern Spain emerged from a rich history that includes millennia of migrations, encounters, conquests, and re-conquests, where Phoenicians, Celts, Iberians, Basques, Romans, Visigoths, Jews, Arabs, and others have made Spain their home. Spain also became the center of one of the greatest empires in modern history, which began with Columbus’ epic voyage in 1492, and soon encompassed lands from the Philippines to the Americas to Europe. Besides enjoying the rich history of Spain, we will also revel in the contemporary wonders of Spain’s great cities, among the most popular in Europe, which are full of amazing architecture, restaurants, museums, and bustling shopping and business districts.

HOUSING
Students will live in Lope de Vega residence hall at the Universidad de Alcalá. This residence is centrally located and students will interact with other university students from Spain and Latin America. While on excursions students will stay in hotels.
COURSES
Students must register for a total of 6 credit hours from among the following classes:
HIST 202 World Civilization (3 credit hours of general education): Fulfills Civilization 2 requirement.
EUROP 336R European Studies-History of Spain (3 credit hours of general education): Fulfills Global and Cultural Awareness requirement or a History or Latin American Studies elective.
HIST 252 History of Modern Latin America (3 credit hours): History and Latin American Studies elective.
Students may not take any other courses on this program, including BYU Online courses, without approval by the program directors and ISP.
COST
$6.200–6,600
Includes Latter-day Saint, undergraduate full tuition (increased cost for graduate and non-Latter-day Saint students), housing, meals at the student residence, a transportation pass to trains, buses and subway, admissions, excursions, hotels with continental breakfast while away from Alcalá, and international health insurance.
Not included: airfare, meals on excursions, personal expenses.
TRAVEL
Students are responsible for purchasing their own airfare to and from the program sites. Airline reservations must be made through BYU Travel. Students should contact a BYU Travel agent.

PREPARATION
All students who are accepted into the program are required to participate in an international, cross-cultural preparation course (IAS 201, 1 credit hour). This evening course will be held during the second block of winter semester 2022.
Part-time and non-BYU students will need to pay an additional tuition fee for enrolling in the prep class.
Accompanying spouses need to be credit-bearing participants on the program. Spouses will also need to apply online and take the preparation course.
All participants are required to show proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination (including booster) at least two weeks prior to departure.
FUNDING SOURCES
Regular BYU tuition scholarships, Pell Grants, and Federal Insured Student Loans may be applied to study abroad programs.
Students who submit the financial aid section of the ISP application and who have a current FAFSA form on file at the Financial Aid Office (A-41 ASB) will be considered for a study abroad scholarship and may be considered for other scholarships. They must indicate on their original online application that they want to be considered for financial aid.
Academic departments and colleges may assist with scholarships and grants.
Private grants and scholarships outside of BYU may also assist (see kennedy.byu.edu/scholarships).
BYU Experiential Learning Funds may also be available—check with the advisement staff for your major.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Students must be 18 years-of-age or older to participate.
Complete the online application at kennedy.byu.edu/apply. A nonrefundable $35 application fee is required.
Applicants will be interviewed once the application is complete.
Students will be notified via e-mail of their acceptance into the program.

FACULTY
Jeffrey Shumway is associate professor of history. Among his teaching specialties is History 202: World Civilizations Since 1500. Professor Shumway was trained in Latin American history, which gives him a unique perspective on Spanish history, especially as it relates to Spain as a world empire. His wife Kathy and three of their children will be accompanying him on this program.

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT
The program is tentatively scheduled to begin on 20 June, with students completing the program on 12 August. More specific recommendations regarding travel will be provided to program participants in the preparation course.
