Zotshi Mcako grew up in a poor family in a South African township in the 1940s. Training as a nurse allowed her to return to her community and shape it for the better. This presentation charts her path to becoming a mayor in the final years of apartheid and outlines the great impact she had on her community.
Leslie Hadfield has been teaching African history at BYU since 2010 and is now the coordinator of BYU’s Africana Studies major. Hadfield primarily studies South African contemporary social and political history. She is currently finishing a book on the experiences of black nurses in the Eastern Cape. Hadfield received a PhD in African history at Michigan State University.
