The purpose of journalism is to provide the public with the information that is most relevant to their life as members of a given society. Yet how does a magazine attract and retain readers in the first place? Hear how women’s fashion magazines became a platform for public discourse regarding women’s education in the 1870s Russia.

Katya Jordan is an assistant professor in the Department of German and Russian at BYU, where she teaches courses on Russian language and literature. Her research focuses on literary representation of female silence. She is the recipient of a 2018 BYU Women’s Research Initiative (WRI) University Grant, which helped make some of her research on this topic possible.
