Henry VIII’s Queen Katherine Parr sorrowfully confesses her own sins while inventing a new English sacrament. Mary Sidney Herbert rewrites biblical psalms of lament as Englished poetic worship. Both of these Renaissance Englishwomen use the rites of grief to speak for themselves and for a revolutionized English faith. Both make new words, new worlds, out of sorrow itself.

Dr. Elizabeth Hodgson, author of Grief and Women Writers in the English Renaissance, was named the 2022 lecturer for the Inaugural Brandie R. Siegfried Lecture event.

Dr. Hodgson’s lecture will be preceded by Ally Christiansen’s Teichert-Prize-winning performance of Barbara Strozzi’s “Amante loquace” and followed by a reception featuring photographs by Lupita Herrera, the 2021-22 recipient of the Brandie R. Siegfried Global Women’s Studies Scholarship.
