Van C. Gessel, a professor of Asian and Near Eastern languages, will share his experiences while translating Japanese literature, particularly eight works of Japanese Catholic author Endō Shusaku, including a discussion of his best-known novel Silence, which deals with the persecution of Japanese Christians in the early seventeenth century, and Gessel’s work as a literary consultant for Martin Scorsese’s film adaptation of Silence.
Last April, Japan awarded Gessel an imperial decoration, the 旭日中綬章, or the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, for his contribution in “developing Japanese literary studies in the United States and promoting mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.”
