What brought Britons to reject membership of the European Union? Was it fear of massive immigration from the Middle East—or elsewhere? Or were Brits tired of being badgered by Brussels? What will happen in Scotland and the Irelands? Will we have a “hard” Irish border and risk a resumption of “The Troubles”? And why has it been so hard to negotiate the terms of Brexit?

Ted R. Bromund is a senior research fellow in Anglo-American relations in the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, based in Washington, D.C. Bromund’s interests have been U.S.–UK–European relations and multilateral treaties, but he writes widely on U.S. foreign policy and grand strategy, and British politics, for publications on both sides of the Atlantic.
