Eric Hyer is a Council on Foreign Relations international affairs fellow and professor of political science and Kennedy Center Asian Studies faculty coordinator at BYU. Hyer’s research focuses on China’s foreign relations, especially regional relations and territorial conflicts, including field research on boundaries with Russia, Vietnam, Mongolia, and along borders with South and Central Asia. Hyer has traveled extensively within China, including Tibet, and twice traversed the Karakorum Highway between western China and Pakistan. As a Fulbright Scholar at the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing (1995–96), he taught courses on international relations theory, U.S. foreign policy, and U.S.–China relations. Hyer is the author of the Pragmatic Dragon: China’s Grand Strategy and Boundary Settlements (2015), has published numerous academic articles, and is associate producer of the documentary films From the Masses to the Masses: An Artist in Mao’s China (2005) and Helen Foster Snow: Witness to Revolution (2000).
