Michael Hale retired from government service in 2018 after twenty-five years as an East Asian political and security analyst at the CIA. Hale served as deputy national intelligence officer for East Asia and was a member of the Senior Analytic Service. He received BAs in history and Chinese from the University of Utah and an MA in international studies from the Kennedy Center at BYU. Hale served in the Taiwan Taichung Mission. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and speaks some Japanese and French. He and his wife live in Leesburg, VA, and they are the parents of five children.
